Air intake sensors can be found in all motorcycles equipped with fuel injection. Based on the data from these components, the engine control module determines how much fuel has to be added in different working modes – when you’re starting the motor, open the throttle wide for rapid overtaking, or just cruising along the highway. Usually, there are two crucial sensors installed in the throttle body – TPS and MAP sensors. The former is essentially a potentiometer changing its output voltage in accordance with the current throttle position. It’s reliable and durable enough to last for many thousands of miles, but over time, some of its internal electrical parts may start malfunctioning. This sensor is unrepairable, so once it gets faulty, replacement is the only solution.
The MAP sensor measures air pressure in the manifold thus giving information about how much air actually enters the cylinder(s). Sometimes, it’s combined with an air temperature sensor meant to take into account the changes in air density at higher or lower temps. A common issue with MAP sensors is their gradual contamination, but fortunately, it can be easily resolved with a special cleaner.
