Although fuel injection first appeared on motorcycles in the mid-1980s, it entered mass production and became popular in the early 2000s. These days, the system has almost superseded carburetors and changed the principles of motor adjustment. Its operation greatly depends on electronic sensors determining current RPM, throttle position, air density, and some other parameters. The earlier models used a so-called Alpha-N system in which the injector open time depends on RPM and throttle position only, but more modern systems also take air density and temperature into account for mixing air and fuel in a more precise manner.

The air intake of a modern fuel-injected motorcycle commonly contains a manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP for short), throttle position sensor (TPS), and idle air control valve. To tell the truth, there were some rare models using the MAF (mass air flow) sensor instead of the MAP one, for instance, the early versions of the Honda Goldwing GL1800. But soon, the MAP sensor turned out to be more suitable for use in motorcycles, and most of them employ this kind of equipment to measure the air pressure. It works nice, features rather reliable construction, and serves quite long, but still, its lifespan is limited.

The TPS also has a limited service life. Inside, it's a kind of a potentiometer whose inner electrical contacts gradually wear out. As a result, the control module receives wrong data, and the rider feels jerks during acceleration, has trouble starting the motor, or experiences other issues caused by the wrong A/F mixture.
