Hitting your back during a motorcycle crash is probably the worst thing that can happen to you since you risk getting a spinal cord injury. Depending on the complexity of the injury, the damaged spinal cord can have a negative effect on many organs of your body, causing paralysis and other neurological dysfunctions. Recovery usually takes a lot of time, work, and patience. This is why wearing a back protector is so important when riding a motorcycle. It can’t completely guarantee you won’t get injured, but it can make the difference between minor damage and a life-threatening trauma.
A critical piece of safety gear, a back protector absorbs the impact force and distributes it more evenly across the entire back to help eliminate broken vertebrae and ribs as well as protect your central nervous system, liver, spleen, and kidneys from damage caused by a blow. So no matter whether you’re a professional racer, off-road enthusiast or street rider, you’ll benefit from wearing a back protector. However, many riders still wonder whether they need a back protector or not because today a lot of motorcycle jackets and suits feature special pockets with back protector inserts. But frankly, pocket back inserts that come with your gear are considered an absolute minimum. You can upgrade to an aftermarket protector inserts that are made thicker for increased protection, but they often won’t be large enough to cover the lumbar area.
If you need more coverage, a strap-on back protector is the way to go. It is worn separately and comes in various sizes and styles to suit both men and women. This protector attaches to your back using a strap system which allows for easy adjustment to ensure a close and comfortable fit. If you want your protector to provide a perfect fit without making adjustments, opt for a vest back protector. Vests usually come with a large pocket to hold the protector in place. This type is widely used by racers and those riders who wear tight clothes which can cause the strap-on protector to dislodge easily.
While choosing the type of the protector that suits your riding style is vital for your comfort and performance, you also have to be sure the back protector is CE1 or CE2 certified. Both safety standards ensure that the protector is capable of minimizing injury in the event of a crash, but CE2 protectors allow for less impact force to be transferred through the rider’s body than CE1, thus offering increased protection. However, they are more expensive, heavier and often bulkier. CE Level 1 protectors are a great option for regular use but when it comes to sport and track applications, CE Level 2 protectors are your best bet.
The back protector you’ve chosen should be the right size for you. If it’s too big, it won’t fit comfortably under your jacket. The protector that’s too small won’t cover the lumbar area and will restrict your movements. To choose the correct size, it’s recommended to check the manufacturer’s sizing chart. On our website, you’ll discover an abundant variety of premium-quality back protectors from the most trusted manufacturers in the industry.
