Erik Buell, the former Harley-Davidson engineer, founded Buell Motorcycle Company in 1983 in East Troy, Wisconsin. He designed his first machine, the RW750 with a liquid-cooled square-four two-stroke engine, for the AMA Formula One Motorcycle Road Championship. After that, Erik was focused on producing racing-inspired, performance-oriented, technologically advanced street and sports motorcycles, most of which were powered by Harley motors. The company was officially formed in 1994 when Harley-Davidson decided to acquire 49% share of the business. Four years later, Buell sold another 49% to Harley, leaving with only 2% of the company he started. Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis, in 2009 Harley-Davidson decided to close its Buell branch discontinuing all the models.

When under the wing of the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the U.S., Erik Buell was able to introduce many innovations into the design of his bikes. The latest models of Buell motorcycles featured such pioneering advances as the Zero Torsional Load (ZTL) front brake system with rim-mounted brake disc, “fuel in frame,” and “oil in swingarm” technology. Buell designs were focusing on centralizing mass, lowering unsprung weight, and increasing frame rigidity. All that makes Buell bikes short, light, nimble, comfortable, street-friendly, and easy to maintain and repair. Even though Buell no longer manufactures production motorcycles, in November 2009 Harley-Davidson and Buell announced the launch of Erik Buell Racing (EBR). The branch was opened for focusing solely on motorsport versions of the Buell 1125R model for AMA Superbike Championship privateer teams.

During its short history, Buell Motorcycle Company built 136,923 motorbikes. One of the most versatile models designed by the company’s engineers was the Buell Firebolt XB-series produced from 2002 until 2010. The latest version, XB12X, comes with a rear baggage rack, wide handlebars with hand protection, dual seat, large ZTL-type front disc brake with a six-piston caliper, rear suspension with a Showa mono-shock, analog and digital instrument cluster, windscreen, and dual headlights protected by grilles. The motorcycle is powered by a four-stroke 1203cc V-twin engine with air cooling and 45-degree pushrod capable of producing 103 horsepower. The powerplant is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission with a Kevlar-reinforced belt final drive system. Other prominent models produced by Buell are the Blast (2000-2009), S3 Thunderbolt (1997-2002), M2 Cyclone (1997-2002), S1 and X1 Lightning (1996-2002), and many others. Some of them can be seen in video games and movies.
