Cobra USA is widely known as the company that revolutionized the metric cruiser market. In the late 1980s, when there was no aftermarket support for Japanese cruisers, Tim McCool and Ken Boyko started designing a metric exhaust system for the Yamaha Virago 750. Soon their assortment or pipes greatly expanded to meet the demand in the new yet fast-growing niche. Honda’s Magna and Shadow models customized with Cobra USA exhaust and bodywork, featured in Cycle World and then shown at the Dealer Expo in 1994, marked the brand’s big foray into the motorcycle market. Only Honda badges could tell these were Japanese bikes; the attendees mistook them for V-Twins. This event also started a good tradition of Cobra creating one unique custom bike every year, sooner in partnership with Denny Berg, and exposing it at the dealer show.
