In a nutshell, engine calibration is a rather complex process that includes a selection of numerous control parameters to achieve optimal performance. Of course, all these criteria have to correspond to the equipment installed, which means that they have to be reconsidered in the case of serious engine modifications and upgrades. Besides, certain mistakes might happen at the design stage, and to address the issue, you may need to perform recalibration. The bad news, most of the factory engine control modules don’t offer the end user such a possibility.
The good news, aftermarket companies offer many solutions on how to alter engine settings and adapt them to your requirements and new equipment, be it a performance air intake, exhaust, or fuel system parts. Modern aftermarket calibrators create a user-friendly interface between the ECM and your PC and use specialized software allowing you to see such parameters as injector opening/closing time, air-fuel ratio and data coming from the lambda sensor, percentage of throttle opening, etc., along with various tables showing the dependence of these parameters on motor revs. By carefully analyzing this information, you can ensure the best operation and performance of your cruiser bike.
