Unless you drive an electric bike, your motorcycle definitely needs fuel to run. For this reason, it is equipped with a special fuel container, known as a gas tank. Depending on the bike you own, it may vary in size and shape as well as be made from different materials, yet serving the same purpose of safely holding a significant amount of gas to feed the engine while running. It is connected directly to the fuel system of your bike for a quick and safe fuel supply.
Since fuel is highly inflammable, no leaks are acceptable no matter whether you’re driving your bike at the moment or it is stored in your garage. That’s why, any signs of a leaking gas tank, like specific odors, cannot be ignored. Once you notice them, inspect your gas tank for leaks. Unlike a car or truck where a gas tank is hidden from the eye, the fuel tank of your motorcycle is an essential body part which not only serves as a fuel container, but also gives your bike a custom look. So, the way it looks is no less important than its ability to operate. Unfortunately, being an exterior body part, your gas tank is prone to collecting dents and scratches, as well as fading due to UV rays. In addition to its primary function of storing fuel, your gas tank also helps to spread the weight of your bike for better handling and steering. That’s why if you are about to upgrade your bike with an aftermarket gas tank, make sure its weight is equal to the weight of your original unit. You should also keep in mind that a gas tank with a higher capacity, when filled to the full, will increase the total weight of your bike even if the tank itself is lighter than the original one, which may affect your fuel consumption and acceleration.
The fuel tank of your bike is hermetically sealed to prevent leaking and keep dust and moisture out. Although, when you’re riding, the level of fuel inside the tank becomes lower, creating free space which should be filled out with something. This is the job of your fuel tank venting system that allows your tank to breathe, releasing both vacuum and pressure. As a rule, the venting process is done with either a vented cap or pressure vent. It is crucial that the tank matches the type of your venting system, so bear this in mind when purchasing a new gas tank.
