The technology of motorcycle construction has been changing over the years. Therefore, the ignition systems on bikes vary according to the period when they were manufactured. Thus, the bikes built before the 1970s mainly utilize mechanical advance ignition systems, whereas those created after the 1970s have pulsar coils instead. Considering that Indian is the oldest motorcycle company in the U.S., it is quite possible that you have one of the classic models of the pre-1970 era, for instance, the legendary Scout or Chief. Regardless of its design, the main role of the ignition system is to deliver spark to the cylinders at the correct time.

The spark has to be rather strong compared to the overall capacity of a motorcycle’s electrical system. Therefore, the initially produced voltage has to be amplified. This increase is obtained by means of an ignition coil that receives a low charge from a battery and then releases the stored energy thus increasing the voltage which is eventually delivered to a spark plug. Indian motorcycle ignition system parts, just like those of any other bike, are the first components to check in the case of starting problems. In some cases, the culprit is a poor quality battery, while in others a bad factory starter may cause an issue. If you need replacements, visit our store to find high quality parts from reputable aftermarket manufacturers.
