Maisch & Co, the manufacturer of Maico motorcycles, mostly known for its enduro and motocross dirt bikes, was founded by Ulrich Maisch in 1926 in Germany. Initially, the company assembled light motorcycles equipped with 98 and 123 cc two-stroke ILO engines. The business really started to pick up the pace after World War II when the M125 model powered by a 123 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine went into mass production in 1948. The next year, the more beefed-up M150 came out. After receiving a new rear suspension, these models were renamed the M126 and M151 respectively. The Maico Fanal, released in 1953, was the first Maico motorcycle equipped with a four-speed transmission. Later that year, the M200 powered by a 197 cc single-cylinder engine was introduced.

The company launched the successful line of scooters named Maicoletta in the 1950s. It was one of the largest motor scooters produced at the time. The model was powered by a 247 cc single-cylinder, two-stroke engine. The imported version came with a 277 cc motor. The Maicoletta was much more powerful and faster than its competition, reaching the top speed of 70 mph. For example, other popular scooters such as the Vespa and Lambretta, equipped with 125 cc and 200 cc engines respectively, could not go faster than 60 mph. Besides, the Maicoletta was fitted with a Bosch 6v electric pendulum starter, which was considered advanced technology in the 1950s.

During the 1950s, several new models were unveiled, including the M175T, M175S, M200T, M200S, Typhoon, Passat 175, and Blizzard. The next decade, Maico supplied the M250B all-terrain motorbikes equipped with a 247 cc engine to the German armed forces. This venture marked the beginning of the mass production of Maico enduro and motocross bikes intended for the general public. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Maico racing models proved to be very capable in American and European championships. Even today, the 1974 ½ 400 cc and 400 cc GP, 1981 490 cc enduro bikes and all 501 cc MX Maico models remain some of the most demanded by many vintage twin-shock motorcycles. Unfortunately, Maico started experiencing some financial problems in the 1980s, and in 1983, the company filed for bankruptcy. After that, only the small amount of motocross and enduro bikes were produced branded as the M-Stars for the U.S. market.
