The motocross or dirt bike that you ride over the hills, ravines, and sand dunes has a capable motor. However, it also generates lots of waste heat that needs to be dealt with by means of a cooling system. This system includes a radiator, pump, and of course, liquid coolant specifically formulated to draw out heat and release it into the surrounding air. This liquid comes with various additives necessary for making it less aggressive to metal surfaces and protecting them from rust and oxides.
Most present-day engine coolants are based on ethylene glycol, although their less toxic propylene glycol counterparts quickly gain in popularity. Besides, there are non-glycol, water-based coolants with anticorrosion packages, but they typically offer no freeze protection, and their boiling point can hardly exceed 212 °F. Glycol-based liquids don't turn into ice when the temperature drops to -35 °F or even lower, and their boiling points can be higher than that of water.
