Motocross and dirt bikes are ultimate off-road performers that can tackle the most rugged of terrains. These motorcycles are true masterpieces of efficiency where each and every component is designed to withstand huge stresses, and the engine provides enough torque for improved responsiveness in tough situations. Motorcycles of this type are equipped with two-stroke engines, whose architecture is less complex than that of four-stroke motors, while the specific power output is superior. Reed valves are among the most essential components in a two-stroke engine as they control the flow of the air-fuel mixture into the crankcase.
Reed valves are simple devices that allow the mixture to flow in just one direction. When the up-stroke creates a vacuum within the crankcase, the petals open and the air-fuel blend flows in, while the down-stroke forces the petals to close preventing the mix from flowing back. Reed petals may crack or may not open all the way or close tight enough resulting in loss of power, hesitation, and erratic idle.
