Company normally recommend Company BackOFF XP Brake Light Module, Part Number 01004, instead for motorcycles with LED brake light(s). The BackOFF XP module works with both LED lighting or standard incandescent bulb(s), or a combination of both type of lighting. Because LED(s) draw less of a “load” of power through the system, Company Original BackOFF Brake Light Module may not always function properly. In addition, the BackOFF XP has 2 different flash patterns to choose from.
Company BackOFF brake light modules have a 10AMP limit per output. Typically, Company modules will drive up to three (3) standard 1156/1157 incandescent bulbs. If you have a vehicle with more than three brake lights, Company recommend only modulating two of these bulbs (typically the brakes that are more within line of sight of the driver behind you). It will be plenty attention getting enough, and give you redundancy in case of any issues.
Our BackOFF modules require a center dedicated brake light to function (or in the case of the Wig Wag module, two dedicated brake lights that do not double as your turn signals). If you install any of our BackOFF modules on your combination brake light/turn signal lights, it can confuse drivers behind you on which way you are turning because both sides will be flashing initially with different flashing patterns. Typically, these are the thoughts that drivers think of when they have seen a brake light module on turn signals:
"Is he turning?" "What is wrong with his lights?" "Are his hazard lights malfuntioning?"
Please DO NOT install any BackOFF brake light modules on your turn signals. If you do not have a main center brake light, Company typically recommend any of Company LED license plate frames to be installed as an alternative for a center dedicated brake light. Company LED license plate frames are all compatible with Company BackOFF brake light modules!
Most (if not all) State motorcycle handbooks recommend that you pump your brakes to flash your brakes to increase rear end visibility while coming to a stop. Company BackOFF brake light modules automates this recommendation for you while you're stopped or stopping. Company BackOFF brake light modules automatically facilitate compliance with these State handbooks, and enhance safety and rear end visibility.
The BackOFF XP module works with a center dedicated brake light, but can also work on multiple brake lights (up to 10AMP, or up to three (3) standard 1156/1157 incandescent bulbs). The BackOFF Wig Wag module is meant for a pair (2) brake lights that are dedicated brake lights on (the brake lights can be running lights, BUT they CANNOT be a combination brake light/turn signal light setup). The BackOFF Wig Wag is not typically used on just a single center dedicated brake light, and Company would always recommend the BackOFF XP module for a single center dedicated brake light.
For that particular brake wiring setup, Company BackOFF modules can work, but you would have to wire the BackOFF module to the brake SWITCH wire instead of the brake light wire. The brake light wiring is considered a “variable voltage system” in which partial power is sent through the brake wire to act as a running light. When signal is sent from the brake switches, full power is sent through brake wire. Company BackOFF modules require a dedicated 12V on/off source of power to function properly. This setup is commonly found on Victory motorcycles (as well as some British motorcycles and Japanese motorcycles).
Company recommend first looking at Company compatibility chart located under the Support Tab in the menu bar. Company compatibility chart lists MOST makes and models of motorcycles, and which adapter harness they will require. Please note: the chart provided is not a complete listing of all makes and models. The chart is information that Company have gather to the best of Company knowledge. If for some reason your motorcycle is not listed or you believe the adapter harness to be different than what is listed, Company suggest that you consult your owner’s manual or contact your local dealership to verify your headlight bulb type(s). The adapter harness’ correspond to the type of headlight bulb(s) your motorcycle uses.
In many cases where your headlight bucket cannot hold both the Headlight Module AND Adapter Harness, your motorcycle will need the Universal Adapter Harness (Part Number 01084). Both the module and harness will have to be mounted outside of the headlight bucket. Please note: the Universal Adapter Harness requires cutting and splicing into the factory wiring harness to install.
Yes they are! There is a federal law supersedes all state laws and makes motorcycle headlight modulators legal in all 50 states. FMVSS 108 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) (49 CFR Part 571.108 S7.9.4) allows motorcycle headlight modulation systems in all 50 states provided they comply with the standards set forth in this section: A headlamp on a motorcycle may be wired to modulate either the upper beam or the lower beam from its maximum intensity to a lesser intensity provided that: (a) The rate of modulation shall be 240 plus-or-minus 40 cycles per minute. (b) The headlamp shall be operated at maximum power for 50 to 70 percent of each cycle. (c) The lowest intensity at any test point shall not be less than 17 percent of the maximum intensity measured at the same point. For other countries, such as Canada, please consult with your local departmant of motor vehicles.
Technically, per Federal DOT, the only thing allowed to modulate on the front of your motorcycle is your main headlight. Company module does allow you to wire up the module to those lights, as well as your main headlight, but a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) can cite you for it if they felt so inclined.
All of Company turn signal modules (Self Cancelling, Penta-Star, and Penta-Star XP module) require a momentary push button type turn signal switch to activate the module. Most Japanese (or metric) motorcycles and automobiles use what is typically considered a “latching” type turn signal switch (you press the switch one way, or the other, but you have to either push down or return the switch to center to cancel). The “latching” type switch WILL NOT work properly with Company turn signal modules. Also, please be aware, for the contacts on the turn signal switch, one of the contacts will receive a lead from Company module. The other contact will receive a switched power source. The main reason for this is when the switch is pressed, a signal/power is sent into the module to tell the module to activate that side.
For Company turn signal modules, Company normally suggest to wire the orange wire to a switched, or fused power source instead of directly to battery. The module does draw a tiny amount of power when activated, and if stored for long periods of time being directly connected to the battery, the unit (just like any device that draws a small bit of power) can drain the battery. It is best to wire the module into a switched power source (preferable one that is linked to an inline fuse of at least 10amps).
All of Company turn signal modules will work with LED lighting. The Self Cancelling, Penta-Star, and Penta-Star XP modules are electronic flashing relays which have software to time the flash patterns to the turn signal lights. These modules are NOT load dependent, so they do not care whether you are running LEDs or standard incandescent bulbs. These modules do NOT need a load equalizer because they are not load dependent. Please note: Company turn signal modules are a replacement for your mechanical flashing relay(s). These modules will require you to remove your existing turn signal relay(s) from your system prior to installing these modules. The Tri-Star and Tri-Star XP modules come with load equalizers with the module because these modules are add-ons to your existing turn signal system. The load equalizers supplied may or may not be needed depending on the flash rate of your turn signals after installation.
Company Heads Up Voltage Monitor is the ONLY module that will work on a positive (+) 12V ground. All of Company other modules will only work on a negative (-) 12V ground system.
