Internal combustion engines run very hot during their operation and need effective cooling in order not to overheat. Most water-cooled bikes use the mixture of antifreeze and water. Antifreeze can be based on ethylene glycol or propylene glycol whose properties are similar except for toxicity – the former is extremely poisonous and harmful to the environment. Also, any coolant contains some additives meant to improve its qualities, protect the motor components from corrosion, and avoid cavitation. Over time, these additives deteriorate and lose their qualities, so a cooling fluid becomes more aggressive to metal parts including a water pump.
