There are several kinds of valvetrain systems responsible for synchronizing the movement of pistons and valves. The rotational motion from the crank to cam(s) can be transferred via gears only (like in most H-D engines), chains and sprockets, or belts and pulleys. The second and third ways are peculiar to many Japanese engines having the OHC architecture. Whether your motorcycle uses a timing chain or belt, it has to be tensioned for proper and safe operation. As all metal chains tend to sag, they need a tensioner having a slider that automatically moves out to compensate for the increased chain's length.

Timing belts have an advantage in this regard – despite their flexibility, most of them don't stretch over time, so the rollers rotating with them keep the same position providing constant tension. However, rollers, belts, and even pulleys gradually wear out. In the worst case scenario, the worn-out belt can rip, or its teeth can strip, causing severe damage to the whole motor when its pistons hit the valves. To avoid that, belt replacement has to be done beforehand, usually in accordance with the recommended service intervals. Fortunately, they are long enough for motorcycles.

Meanwhile, many modern belts are made of very durable and extremely strong materials with the use of proprietary technology; as a result, their lifespan can be even compared to that of the chain. Inside, these parts have high-tensile fibers which practically eliminate the risk of sudden rupture. In our online store, you will find an assortment of such belts along with replacement pulleys and belt tensioners. Made in compliance with the strictest industry standards, they are meant to deliver reliable performance and serve long. Given the importance of the valvetrain system, a relatively low price for its components, and certain complexity of the job itself, it's not recommended to install inferior parts there.
