Back in the good old days, all bikes came equipped with an ammeter gauge that allowed riders to monitor charging activity in real-time. This gauge is designed to indicate the flow of electricity. When you switch your lights or other accessories, the voltage regulator kicks the alternator that transmits electricity to the battery via the ammeter. If the alternator is operating properly, you’ll see a “+” sign on the ammeter gauge. The higher the readings, the heavier the electricity flow. If you see a “-” sign, your alternator is either non-functional or unable to produce enough energy for the battery. Ammeter gauges still may be found on some older Kawasaki and Yamaha bikes, but nowadays they are mostly replaced by voltmeters.

Voltmeters don't indicate electrical flow like ammeters. Instead, they measure the voltage your battery is putting off. This gauge also helps monitor the battery and the alternator but doesn’t show electricity on the job. On the other hand, voltmeters are much easier to read. This is because, in voltmeters, the needle isn’t constantly wiggling back and forth, confusing you. When your motorcycle is not running, the voltmeter measures the battery at 12.1 Volts or above.
