The history of SuperTrapp began in Davis, California, in the garage of its founder, Paul Moller. In the late 1960s, he was involved in experimental trials of the XM-3, one of the earliest attempts at creating a hovercar. Searching for a target to apply his innovative tunable disc technology, Moller turned to the motorcycle industry – and that is how the SuperTrapp muffler was invented, which became one of the most demanded parts ever made for motorbikes.
From such humble beginnings, SuperTrapp Industries, Inc. evolved into one of leading manufacturers of aftermarket performance exhausts. Their exhaust systems are used in a variety of applications including motorcycle, automotive, and all-terrain vehicles. The SuperTrapp brand is recognized for setting performance standards that combine added power, innovative style, quality, and excellent sound. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, SuperTrapp produces top-grade aftermarket exhausts. It is a parent company for performance brands such as Kerker, JayBrake, Jardine, and FPS Racing and an OEM supplier for major U.S. and international motorcycle brands.
A signature technology of SuperTrapp exhaust systems uses diffuser tunable discs. A series of discs with aligned diameter make up the exhaust outlet. By adding or removing discs, the driver can tune the powerband and sound wave. Subtracting discs will decrease the exhaust opening and increase backpressure, resulting in the decrease in powerband and more low-end torque. It also helps to decrease the exhaust sound and enrich carburetion. Adding discs will increase the exhaust opening and decrease backpressure. This will widen the powerband at the top end of the curve. It will also increase the exhaust sound and lean out carburetion.
The gap in-between the discs is bigger on the outside than on the inside. This creates an expansion chamber that allows for faster flow of gases from higher pressure inside to the lower pressure outside. Lower pressure helps pull the exhaust gases away from the engine that in its turn allows for much more fresh air and fuel to enter the engine during the next stroke. This is exactly what is meant by the “scavenging effect”. Much more exhaust coming out. Much more fresh air & fuel coming in. Every SuperTrapp quiet muffler comes with an advised number of discs to use. Simple experiments will always allow you to find the needed ratio.
