The history of the Triumph motorcycle brand dates back to 1884, when Siegfried Bettmann, a German immigrant who came to Britain, started his first company at the age of 20. At first, he was primarily buying motorcycles and selling them under his own brand. Two years later, Moritz Schulte, another German native, joined the company as a partner. He encouraged Bettmann to start manufacturing processes in the Triumph facility. The first Triumph-branded bicycle was produced in 1889. The motorcycle production started in 1902. The first Triumph bike was equipped with a Belgian engine. More than 500 motorcycles of this model were sold in 1903. In 1905, Triumph started manufacturing motorcycles using components completely designed and made in-house.

During WWI, Allied forces needed an effective means of communication with troops on the front line. The British Government selected Triumph bikes, the Model H Roadster, in particular, to replace messengers on horses. The company supplied more than 30,000 bikes to support a war effort. After WWII, the largest Triumph market in the U.S. demanded a lot of motorcycles for long-distance riding, so the production of the Triumph Speed Tween with a 650 cc motor was launched. During the 1960s, the most notable models produced by the company were the Triumph Tina equipped with a 100 cc two-stroke engine and its more powerful version, the Triumph Tigress. One of the most successful models of the 1970s was the 744 cc Triumph Bonneville T140. The model remained in production from 1973 until 1988. Today, Triumph Motorcycles Ltd is the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the UK. The company was established in 1983 by former property developer John Bloor, who acquired the original company Triumph Engineering along with the name and manufacturing rights.

Some of the most popular models in the modern era of the Triumph include the Triumph Adventurer 900 launched in 1996. The nameplate was taken from the early 1970s, when Triumph manufactured trail bikes with a 500 cc parallel-tween engine. The new 885 cc water-cooled 12-valve triple motor is mounted on a steel frame with one seat. The model features raised handlebars, large rear fender, chrome-plated engine, and megaphone-shaped mufflers. Starting in 2002, the Triumph Bonneville America was produced using a 790 cc air-cooled, parallel-tween carbureted engine. In 2007, the model was upgraded with an 865 cc motor, and in 2008, electronic fuel injection was introduced. The motorcycle features an adjustable clutch, cast-alloy wheels, cone-shaped chrome mufflers, and chrome-plated engine and chain covers. The Triumph Rocket III has the largest-displacement engine among all production motorcycles. It is powered by a three-cylinder 2294 cc (140 cu in) liquid-cooled engine that produces up to 148 hp and attains a top speed of 145 mph. The original model was introduced in 2004. Several versions of the bike were produced, including the Classic, Roadster, Tourer and Rocket III Touring. The latest iteration of the Triumph Thunderbird went into production in 2009. The model is powered by a 1597 cc or 1699 four-stroke parallel-twin engine good for 85 hp or 97 hp, respectively. Previous versions of this popular bike were produced from 1949 to 1966, in 1983-1984, and from 1995 until 2004.
