In 1946, Piaggio, an Italian motor vehicle manufacturer, introduced scooters under the Vespa brand name, which means “wasp” in Italian. All Vespa scooters feature a distinct steel unibody enclosing engine and other mechanisms protecting them from dirt and concealing grease, a front fairing for shielding the rider from wind, and a flat floorboard for foot protection. The first Vespa model was presented in Spring 1946. It featured a 98 cc two-stroke engine paired to a three-speed transmission allowing the user to reach a top speed of 37 mph. Early models featured no forced air cooling, but later, the electric fan was added which was powered by a magneto flywheel. The innovative design with mudguards, small diameter wheels, and engine cowling was patented in April 1946.

The revolutionary Vespa offered a new type of transportation and became an immediate success attracting a lot of media attention and arousing public curiosity. The company sold 2,484 scooters in 1946, 10,535 bikes the next year, and in 1951, this number reached 171,200 vehicles. In 1953, the Vespa 125 received an improved engine producing 5 hp. The model offered the top speed of 47 mph. Its popularity skyrocketed when the scooter appeared in a romantic hit movie Roman Holiday. Vespa clubs appeared throughout Europe surpassing 50,000 members by 1952. The Vespa 150 GS, released in 1955, is considered to be the most beautiful scooter ever made. It reaches the top speed of 62 mph thanks to a powerful 150 cc engine making 8 hp.

Earlier models of Vespa came in two sizes – “smallframe” and “largeframe.” For instance, the smallframe Vespa 50, unveiled in 1963, was offered in 50 cc, 90 cc, 100 cc, and 125 cc variants. The largeframe scooters were available with 125 cc, 150 cc, 160 cc, 180 cc, and 200 cc engines. In the late 1970s, the largeframe Vespa range gave way to the PX lineup. The company released the ET model range to stay ahead of the competition. The new Vespa was equipped with an automatic transmission and was available with a variety of engines from a 50 cc two- or four stroke-, up to a 150 cc four-stroke motor. The sales on the U.S. market increased from 12,000 scooters in 1997 to 69,000 bikes in 2002. To facilitate further growth, the company developed the Vespa GT model range. In 2005, Piaggio released its most popular scooter model yet, the vintage-looking Vespa GTS250 powered by a 250 cc engine with electronic fuel injection.
