In 2006, a former NASA engineer Neal Saiki started Zero Motorcycles Inc. in Santa Cruz, California. The company, formerly known as Electricross, is now based in Scotts Valley and manufactures high-performance 100 percent electric motorcycles. Zero combines the best aspects of traditional bikes with modern technologies to create efficient, lightweight, and nimble machines that are very easy and fun to ride. The weight of Zero bikes is minimized due to the use of a rigid frame made of aircraft-grade aluminum. The company develops and manufactures 3-phase, permanent magnet, air-cooled, brushless electric motors and lithium-ion power packs with 102 volts cell configuration forming the “Z-Force” or “ZF” powertrain.

The mass production of the Zero S powered by the Agni Motor began in 2010. The redesigned model with a permanent magnet brushless alternating current motor and increased battery capacity offers the highest range in the lineup delivering up to 223 miles in the city or 112 miles on the highway. Thanks to a smartphone app, the rider can change the bike’s performance profile on the go choosing either Eco or Sport mode. Also in 2010, a dual-sport version, the Zero DS based on the S-chassis was released. The smaller version of the dirt bike, the Zero XU street motorcycle was manufactured from 2011 to 2013 featuring removable batteries. In 2013, fast charging technology became available allowing the user to charge the battery up to six times faster.

Year after year, Zero continues releasing new, upgraded high-performance models equipped with batteries of higher capacity and optional “Power Tanks.” From 2014 to 2017, the company added such models as the SR, DSR, and FXS to its lineup. Police, government authorities, and military use specially equipped Zero Motorcycles featuring sirens, police lights, crash bars, and additional storage compartments. As far as racing is concerned, in 2012, Brandon Miller covered a one-mile course accomplishing an average speed of 101.652 mph setting a Bonneville Land Speed Record using the Zero S ZF6. He beat the previous record by over 23 mph. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, Zero Motorcycles won the races in production electric motorcycle class at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb which is also called “The Race to the Clouds.” The Zero FX became the first production electric bike to break the 12-minute record.
