Touring and adventure motorcycles are designed to cope with long distances on paved roads and off-road trails. The cam chain or belt transfers power from the crankshaft to the camshaft, synchronizing the opening and closing of the valves. The tensioner or pulley keeps the proper tension of the chain or belt to deliver reliable and safe performance.
Depending on the model, there are various designs of the valvetrain including toothed belts, gears, and roller chains. While modern chains are robust and durable, they can wear out and get longer over time, resulting in the loss of power and extra job for tensioners.
