In general, there are two main configurations of primary drive used in V-twins: the chain and belt one. The former employs a chain, sprockets, and tensioner. This assembly is located behind a metal cover, perfectly sealed, and shielded from water and dirt; its inner parts are constantly lubricated with oil. Found in most stock motorcycles, the chain primary drive is very durable and reliable but needs some accurate adjustments and new tensioners (or just their shoes) over time, as a metal chain gradually gets longer due to the wear of its rollers. The system using a belt is a newer solution; it's easy to install or replace and doesn't need any adjustments. However, it's completely open, so dirt and small stones can easily get there. Also, belts may cause problems with high-torque motors or while working at high RPM.
