While most modern bikes come equipped with a computer-controlled fuel injection system, many motorcycles on the road still rely on an old-school carburetor to supply their engines with the right air-fuel mixture. If you have one of them, beyond a doubt, you like your carburetor for quick throttle response and ease of tuning and maintenance which usually involves cleaning and adjusting. The majority of carburetor components are almost unbreakable, yet, some parts like jets and needles may wear out or get damaged due to small particles of dirt that get into the carburetor with air and fuel and thus need to be replaced.

Your carburetor has jets which are small brass fittings that have accurately bored holes in them to let fuel and/or air to pass through. Regardless of the type of the jet, whether it is a main jet, pilot jet or needle jet, its inner diameter is especially calculated to ensure optimum engine performance and efficiency within a specific RPM range. The holes in the jets determine the fuel-to-air ratio and thus how lean or rich your mixture is. So, the jets need to be treated with care and respect. To ensure the constant delivery of the right ratio of an air and fuel mix to the engine, your carburetor must maintain the right level of fuel inside it as long as the motor runs. For this reason, the carburetor is equipped with a float chamber that fulfills a function of a fuel tank. The needle valve and seat help keep the fuel level inside the chamber at nearly the same level. A small vent in the chamber top enables air to escape or enter when the level of fuel decreases or increases. When the fuel level gets low, the float with the needle goes down thus opening the float valve, refilling the chamber with fuel to a preestablished level. When the float chamber is filled, the valve is closed and thus fuel feed switches off again.
