Motorcycle Nitrous Oxide Systems & Parts

First used during World War II in the aircraft industry, nitrous oxide systems found their application in modern racing and motorsport. Adding nitrous oxide to the air-fuel mixture is a proven way to boost engine performance both in automobiles and motorcycles. Normally, N2O is a non-flammable gas, but when heated to more than 570 °F approximately (which normally happens in the combustion chamber), its molecules split into nitrogen and oxygen. The latter is used as an oxidizer and allows for gaining 30-40 hp of extra power. Further growth is also possible depending on a system and engine capabilities, but most motors have to be seriously modified to withstand higher pressure.

There are two main categories of nitrous kits – so-called “wet” and “dry” ones. The former employ an individual fuel system and supply both fuel and nitrous oxide mixed in a special nozzle. Such kits are relatively expensive, but for carbureted motorbikes, this system is generally considered the only way to use nitrous oxide. A “dry” nitrous kit is much more simple, affordable, and practical; it normally includes a bottle, solenoid valve, nitrous lines, and an activation switch. N2O can be delivered into the airbox via a nozzle or with the help of a spray bar directly supplying nitrous oxide into the individual throttle bodies.

In order to control the “dry” system and maintain the right air-fuel ratio, most engine tuners use special fuel controllers or commanders, which allow them to alter the stock fuel mapping of a motorcycle. However, the factory fuel pump and injectors have to support new settings, otherwise, it's recommended to upgrade them first. Another important aspect is the bottle's location. Its pressure rises with temperature, so don't expose the bottle to direct sunlight and never mount it too close to the sources of heat.
