Oxygen sensors are located within the exhaust system and, as their name implies, they are designed to measure the concentration of O2 in the waste gas. They are composed of porous electrodes, which are placed on both sides of the ceramic element containing zirconia. When one part of the element is exposed to fresh cold air, and the other one to hot exhaust, a certain voltage occurs, responding to differences in concentration of oxygen. In general, the signals about such differences and voltage are used by the ECU, which in turn controls the gas and air ratio.
The proper air-fuel ratio means your motorcycle performs as it should and consumes a pre-determined amount of gasoline. It also means that emissions are kept within limits. A faulty O2 sensor sends the wrong data to the computer, which affects the air-fuel balance.
