Dual-sport motorcycles are designed to offer broad versatility through both on- and off-road capabilities. Like most two-wheelers, dual-sport bikes are powered by two-stroke engines that provide ample torque to tackle every situation, whether you are riding in city traffic or exploring tough muddy trails. In two-stroke motors, reed valves play a crucial role in controlling the air-fuel mixture intake, or just air intake, depending on the fuel delivery system. Their simple yet effective function optimizes power and performance.
Reed valves allow the blend to move in just one direction and, within a typical two-stroke engine, they exploit the pressure differential created by the motion of the pistons. During the up-stroke, the drop of pressure allows the petals of the valves to open and the fuel and air to flow into the crankcase. After the explosion, during the downstroke, the mixture moves upwards to reload the combustion chamber, while the pressure caused by the piston seals the reed valve. Cracked, chipped, or loose petals fail to seal off the intake causing starting issues, erratic idle, hesitation, and other problems.
