You’ve just installed an aftermarket air cleaner or exhaust system on your motorcycle, and now you wonder whether you need a fuel management system or not, and if yes, which system will work best for you. Let us make things clearer for you. First of all, remember that in most cases when you make upgrades in terms of performance, your motorcycle should be properly tuned; otherwise, you may make it run even worse than before. A free-flowing exhaust or high-flow air filter will let your engine breathe easier. But to make it perform safely and efficiently you also have to add more fuel to prevent it from running lean. If the engine doesn’t get enough fuel, it will run hotter, which can lead to premature wear and costly repairs. A fuel management system will help you adjust the air-fuel ratio to ensure peak engine performance.
Many of us tend to think that adding a slip-on without upgrading the whole system doesn’t require adjusting fuel delivery. Yes, this may be true, especially if the catalytic converter is in the head pipe. However, often, optimization of the air-fuel mixture is recommended to ensure reliable and long-lasting performance of your engine and vital exhaust components. When installing a new slip-on, the amount of back pressure changes, which, in turn, can change the air-fuel ratio needed for efficient combustion. Unfortunately, even O2 sensors are often not enough to adjust the air-fuel ratio because most bikes will still run at low rpm levels and open loop for idle, which means the factory map is still used. In the low rpm range, bikes from the dealership are programmed to run very lean. When properly tuned, the engine will run cool and produce better horsepower.
