Engine oil is essential for smooth and reliable operation of your Harley Davidson’s motor. It covers all inner metal surfaces with a thin film of lubricant to reduce friction between moving parts, prevent corrosion, and partially draw excess heat generated by hard-working mechanisms and combustion. To perform their functions properly, the oil must circulate through the system, lubricate bearings, camshaft, crankshaft, pistons and so on. For this reason, an oil pump is added to the system. It collects oil from the sump and forces it through the filter to clean it from contaminants, metal shavings, and other debris. When all parts of the motor are lubricated, the liquid returns to the sump.
The majority of modern bikes utilize gerotor pumps that use a pair of rotors with gears meshed together. The inner rotor has fewer teeth than the outer one, so when rotating, the space between teeth is constantly expanding on one side, and shrinking on the other one. The construction allows pumping the engine oils continuously when the motor is running. If the gauge on your instrument panel shows low oil pressure, the problem may lay in a leak or excessive wear of gears in the oil pump. In this case, the replacement is the most reasonable solution.
