Like any other internal combustion engine, a motorcycle motor needs oil to lubricate, cool, and clean its internal components. Depending on engine type and model, there are various configurations of oil systems, yet all of them can be divided into two major groups – wet- and dry-sump. Most motorcycle manufacturers use wet-sump systems, some popular companies like Harley-Davidson rely on dry-sump lubrication, but anyway, the oil needs a reservoir, filter, a net of channels, and pump, which creates sufficient pressure for the lubricant to reach all parts and assemblies.
In the case of Harley’s V-twins, the reason for selecting the dry-sump system is simple. The engine is rather high, and there is not much space for a sump underneath. So, while the oil tank is placed somewhere under the seat, the pump is located in a lower part of the motor and is driven by the crankshaft. The Shovelhead and Evolution engines use an external oil pump, while the internal one employing the gerotor system is installed in more modern Twin Cam Series and Milwaukee-Eight engines by Harley-Davidson. All these parts are reliable enough, but if you're going to beef the motor up for more horsepower, you may need an aftermarket high-output oil pump providing higher pressure.
As for motorcycles with a wet sump, they mainly use the internal pump also based on a gerotor construction, which sucks up the oil flowing to the sump under the force of gravity. Over time, all kinds of pumps can wear out or get mechanical damages, which is fraught with engine breakdown and makes their owners search for replacement parts.
