A battery is a small but crucial part of your scooter. It is designed to provide a burst of energy needed to start a motor and supply power to all electrical and electronic equipment when the engine is not running. Unfortunately, scooter batteries are often overlooked. People tend to forget that any battery has a limited service life and needs to be replaced once in about four years (more or less, depending on usage and weather conditions in your area). It is hard to imagine something more frustrating than the inability to start your scooter after a long winter when the first warm, sunny days encourage you to ride.

Freezing temperatures and improper servicing can drastically reduce the service life of your battery. Sooner or later, you will inevitably be looking for the replacement battery for your scooter, and when the time comes, you can always visit our online store to find a suitable product. It is highly advisable that you choose the type of the battery listed in your scooter’s service manual. This list may be fairly long giving you the opportunity to choose among options that vary in technology, Cold Crank and Amp Hour ratings, terminal types, and physical dimensions. First and foremost, you have to make sure that your new battery can fit the battery compartment of your scooter.

If you don’t like the idea of a direct replacement and want to upgrade your scooter with a more modern and powerful battery that may be a little smaller than the original, you can easily do it by filling the voids in the compartment with foam or rubber. Don’t ever try to fit a taller battery into your battery box. In such a case, you risk damaging the battery or shorting its terminals against the frame. If the chosen battery fits the compartment, pay attention to the position and type of its terminal posts. Make sure that you don’t have to rearrange battery wires inside the box, or check if it is possible, in case you have decided to switch from the battery with exposed lead posts to the one with screw-type terminals.

All scooter batteries can be divided into three main categories: lead-acid, sealed gel electrolyte, and lithium or lithium-ion batteries. Conventional, lead-acid batteries, also called wet batteries, is the most affordable type. Such batteries use somewhat dated technology of lead plate oxidation in a sulfuric acid solution to produce electrical current. It is crucial to keep a lead-acid battery in an upright position to avoid acid spills that can damage your scooter and cause corrosion. One of the main drawbacks of such batteries is the need for their regular maintenance. You have to check the level of acid from time to time and top it off if necessary.

Sealed gel electrolyte batteries have a much longer lifespan than their wet counterparts. They don’t require any maintenance during their lifespan, can be installed at any angle, and are designed to withstand vibration and minor impacts. Besides, these batteries work better at low and high temperatures. Lithium and lithium-ion batteries are little more expensive, but they are perfect for off-season storage since they can hold a charge for up to a year. These batteries feature a compact size and can be equipped with four terminals for easy installation on almost any vehicle. Check your scooter manufacturer specifications to select the battery with sufficient charge capacity that can provide enough power during cold starts.
