A belt or chain drives the camshaft making sure the valves are open and close in due time, and the engine runs as needed. In order to provide a proper driving momentum, the chain or belt has to be tight, and their tensioners are specifically engineered to maintain the tension of either one of the aforementioned parts thus making the valvetrain operate as it should.
