The modern market offers different types of motorcycles, and some of them might seem quite similar at first glance. However, the difference can be found in the chassis construction, the location of the handlebar and foot controls, suspension, etc. Engine performance is also one of such factors, and it can vary even if you compare two motors having the same design and displacement. It's about how they were adjusted at the factory or other places with the necessary equipment. Actually, the electronic fuel injection systems found in most of modern bikes make them very flexible in terms of engine tuning.
Why you may need it? For instance, if you love hitting a race track on your sport bike, you may want to boost its power at high RPMs or even raise a rev limiter. If it's mainly used as an urban commuter, your goals can be increasing low- and mid-RPM torque and throttle responsiveness to feel more confident in busy traffic. The owners of street motorcycles whose motors are commonly adjusted at the factory with fuel economy and emissions in mind can also be interested in power increasing.
Besides, engine tuning can be beneficial or even necessary for those who have installed performance exhaust and/or air intake.
