Springs are some of the most crucial parts of motorcycle suspension, which absorb road impacts, bear the weight of the bike and rider, and, in general, make riding more comfortable. However, in order to do these jobs well, springs have to be selected properly in the design phase or during the upgrade process. The main characteristics of these parts include preload and spring rate. The former shows how the installed spring is compressed from its free length. Some motorcycles allow you to adjust this value, which is very convenient for setting the desired static sag or improving handling. The spring rate determines the spring's stiffness and is measured in pounds per inch.
Improperly chosen or worn-out springs affect handling, safety, and comfort. Although this rarely occurs in a motorcycle world, springs tend to wear out and sag over time. It happens because of loads and the phenomenon known as metal fatigue when microcracks appear inside the material. Potentially, it can lead to a breakdown, which is dangerous at speed; that's why it makes sense to buy the springs made by reputable manufacturers from the correctly selected grades of steel. Also, you may need to replace the springs with those having an altered spring rate in cases when the total weight or riding position has been changed considerably.
