Your Harley Davidson’s engine generates power by burning fuel in the combustion chambers, but to deliver this power to the ground as efficiently as possible and propel your vehicle forward, its transmission and drivetrain parts must do their job properly. The crankshaft of your engine rotates relatively fast, which means it would be hard to start moving if you decide to apply this energy to the rear wheel directly. That is why the transmission is added to reduce rotational speed while increasing torque when lower gears are engaged allowing you to start moving smoothly and gain speed gradually and effectively.

The torque from the output shaft of the transmission is transferred to the ground through the drivetrain and the rear wheel. Modern motorcycles use chains and sprockets, belts and pulleys, or gear shafts as the drivetrain. Chain drives are the most efficient, but they are noisy and require frequent maintenance. On the upside, repair jobs are easy, and replacement parts are inexpensive. Belt drives are silent and don’t require much maintenance, but broken belts are relatively hard to install. Gear shaft drives are virtually indestructible, but they are rather expensive.
