Cleaning and lubing a motorcycle chain is a basic maintenance procedure unless you have a shaft drive. The service interval depends on your riding style, weather, and load, but it's a good rule of thumb to check the chain once in every 300 – 600 miles, adjust it if needed, and apply a sufficient amount of lubricant on it. It never hurts to relube the chain after a prolonged ride in the rain. The chain should always be cleaned prior to lubing. Grime, oil, and dirt tend to accumulate on its surface and act as an abrasive that can shorten its service life. It's recommended to use special chain cleaners that safely remove residues without harming chain components and prepare the surface for further greasing. After spraying the cleaner and scrubbing the chain, rub it dry thoroughly. The lube should be applied on a clean, dry surface only.

Different types of chains need different lubricants. Simple roller chains need to be regularly greased to keep working properly. O-ring type chains, or sealed chains, are used on many modern motorcycles. They already have the lube inside the rubber inserts. What O-ring chain lubes do is protect the chain from rust while also providing cushioning in-between the roller and the sprocket to prolong the chain's lifespan.
