A breather is essentially a valve designed to unseal the crankcase under the action of pressure naturally appearing in the enclosed space while the piston is moving down. A rather primitive surge valve, a breather is the part of the crankcase ventilation system which was greatly improved when people realized that crankcase gases are toxic and not very good for nature. To make them less harmful, the breather guides them to the air intake where they are sucked by the motor with fresh air. Thus, breathers now serve the eco-friendliness of an internal combustion engine no matter the vehicle.

The primary difference between the crankcase ventilation of your motorcycle and the automotive one is that the latter has quite a lot more elaborate design than the former, dictated by far stricter eco standards that modern cars and trucks must meet. Still, the breather is definitely not a part you want to be malfunctioning on your motorcycle. Not only because it’s bad for the planet but also because it’s bad for the engine itself – keep in mind the primary function of the valve and imagine how long the seals and gaskets would last if it was not fulfilled.
