Motorcycle transmission and drivetrain are a complex arrangement of moving parts that serve the purpose of transferring the power from your engine to the rear wheel and providing the gear reduction required to multiply the torque. While doing their job, they suffer damage from vibration due to movements of the components and extreme power they deal with, as well as due to trembling because of road imperfections. To handle all this, the drivetrain and transmission parts must be properly secured to the frame of your motorcycle in multiple points with special mounts that will keep them from unnecessary movements and vibration impact.
Drivetrain and transmission mounts support the weight of transmission and drivetrain parts, which are heavy enough, even if you have a small scooter or lightweight sports bike. For this reason, all motorcycle drivetrain and transmission mounts are made with extremely rigid materials like high-grade steel. This allows them to withstand different forces they are subject to while keeping all transmission and drivetrain parts in place. Thanks to the high strength and durability of the drivetrain and transmission mounts, they are very hard to damage, however, if that happens, a failed mount must be replaced as soon as possible to prevent more serious breakdown.
Many drivetrain and transmission mounts feature a solid rubber cushion element between a pair of metal plates. Such rubber inserts are necessary to enable light movement of the transmission as well as to absorb vibration. Rubber is prone to wear much faster than the metal, that is why the lion’s share of mount replacements happens due to worn out rubber elements. Yet, mounting hardware like bolts and nuts can also get damaged, for instance in a fall off or due to a crash. Once found to be defective, all these components should be replaced as soon as possible.
