A camshaft is a part that determines when exactly each valve opens and closes. What exactly determines that time are the camshaft's lobes and their location. Some configurations make sure the engine is more powerful at high rpm, while others ensure higher performance at the low rpm range. Therefore, the camshafts of any given engine are a compromise between max output and low-end torque, and your dual-sport bike is no exception. Custom camshafts with modified lobes don’t really get the issue addressed, but rather let you reset the balance to your personal liking.

For instance, you want more horsepower at high revs and have already prepared the air intake and exhaust systems for that. You get the corresponding cams that perform slightly worse at the start but are really shining closer to the red zone. If, conversely, you’re not used to revving that high, you get the cams for lower-end torque and enjoy the power exactly where you need it, not somewhere you never get to.
