If your motorcycle is equipped with an independent gearbox that does not share the oil with the motor for lubrication, or if your bike features a driveshaft, then these assemblies will require regular maintenance that includes a gear oil change. This type of oil features higher viscosity than its counterparts designed for engine and clutch lubrication and cooling. Such a lubricant is specifically formulated to create a thin film on gear teeth surface for better sliding contacts between them. It reduces wear and retains its properties even under extreme pressure in high-speed and high-torque conditions. A fully synthetic formula helps resist oxidation, improves thermal stability, makes gear shifting smoother and quieter.

Before changing your gear oil, it is strongly recommended to ride around on your bike for some time to agitate the contaminants that may get settled in the transmission or driveshaft. Most of the debris become suspended in the gear oil and are more likely to come out when you drain the lubricant. The oil changing process is very simple. Clean the area around the fill cap to prevent dirt from getting into the assembly. Open the fill cap to help the oil flow better when you unscrew the drain plug. Clean the magnetic tip of the plug and replace its O-ring. Reinstall the plug. Fill the new gear oil while checking its level with a dipstick.
