In the modern progressive world, electronics take over. It is also true for motorcycles, which now have more electrical parts and electronic accessories than ever. Unlike old-school bikes that had mechanical contact points to control ignition timing, today’s motorcycles use a CDI box for the same purpose. What looks like a plain black box on the outside has capacitors and complex circuitry on the inside, all in order to send the current to the ignition coil(s) to fire the spark plugs at the right time. If your stock box has failed, or you’re looking for a high-performance CDI module for your higher-revving bike, we’ve got you covered.
A capacitor has a very fast charge time and can release the current almost instantly. Its ability to raise the voltage level in a very short time makes the system almost insensitive to electrical shunts. This type of spark timing control system was originally developed for high-RPM applications, which require a hotter spark and shorter spark duration for more efficient combustion. CDI systems allow more control over ignition characteristics while being maintenance-free, which is why motorcycle manufacturers switched from contact points to electronic ignition in the early 1980s.
CDI modules are generally reliable, but years of exposure to temperature extremes and vibration cause the box to eventually go bad. This area is not easy to diagnose and is typically the last one to test, when all other problems with the battery, spark plugs, wiring, etc. are ruled out. If troubleshooting proves you need a new ignition box, here you’ll find the right part for your motorcycle model designed to serve as reliably as the original box without the high price of the original. However, if you want more power and higher RPM, we have plug-and-play solutions that come with altered advance curves or allow you to set the timing the way you want.
