Motorcycles have always been a rather dangerous means of transport, and there are many various devices meant to save the life of a rider and avoid injury in case of an emergency. A kill switch is one of such devices. To put it simply, it's a safety mechanism used to shutdown power to a machine as fast as possible. This mysterious red button on a handlebar draws the attention of anyone who looks at a bike for the first or second time, and it has to always be at the rider's hand when the right decision has to be taken immediately.
For instance, imagine a motorcycle running at high speed, and its throttle has got stuck in the open position because of a jammed cable. RPMs are high, and turning the throttle handle brings no effect. There may simply be no time and possibility to take the hand off the handlebars and turn the ignition key.
