Keep dirt, dust, and road debris out of your motorcycle’s air intake system with a quality pre-filter. Today, the aftermarket offers a bunch of pre-filters and dust covers available in different sizes, types, and designs to cover various riders' needs and requirements. However, it wasn't always so. The strong need for additional protection for the air filter arose at the dawn of off-roading. This is when air pre-filters made their way into the motorcycle industry. Today, the aftermarket supplies hundreds of components to choose from.
Built to withstand the harshest riding environments, including dirt roads and trails, pre-filters protect the actual filter and ensure its proper and lasting operation by keeping out tiny particles of dust and dirt. Most of them prevent splashes of water from saturating the air filter and thus the motor from drowning. Although pre-filters were designed to be used for off-road racing, they are the current choice of those riders who want to optimize their motorcycle’s performance both on the street and track. If you aren’t an avid off-roader and mostly ride around the city or on the highways, your air filter still requires dust protection for better and longer operation. This is when dust covers are used.
