A modern motorcycle is packed with a wide range of costly electrical parts and electronic devices running the gamut from front and rear lights to an ECU. Most of them are engineered to operate within a small current and voltage range, so any significant surge of voltage or current can quickly damage them. To protect your motorcycle’s electrical parts and accessories, the bike is equipped with many different fuses that are usually grouped together in fuse boxes. They are small yet effective safety devices built to protect your bike’s electrical components against short circuit and power surges.

By itself, a fuse is a simple device whose principle of operation is based on the physical properties of metal wires that get hot when electricity runs through them. To allow more electrical current to travel through a wire should be thicker. The fuse works on the same principle. In its housing, which is made from nonconductive materials, there is a metal wire of a certain diameter designed to allow the specific amount of electrical current to flow through it. Once the current exceeds the limit, the wire overheats and burns out extremely fast, breaking the circuit.

If the fuse is burned out it should be replaced to make the electrical circuit work again. However, the cost of such replacement is usually just a small part of the cost of the electrical equipment which the fuse protects. But do not hurry to replace a burn-out fuse as soon as it fails. In addition to its primary function, a fuse may also serve as a wake-up call that there is malfunction in the electrical system of your bike and that you need to identify where the problem is coming from. That’s why, before replacing a failed fuse, first make sure to repair the damage to prevent that from happening over and over again.

Since fuses are designed to protect electrical equipment from damage, the amount of electrical current they can handle is equivalent to the amount of current that is safe for the operation of that electrical equipment. For example, if 5A is the maximum allowed current for your device, you should use a fuse rated for the same voltage. To make this task easier for you, the fuses on your bike are installed in special fuse boxes, and each fuse holder corresponds to a specific motorcycle electrical part or system and is marked with the fuse size required. Plus, you may always find the right fuse size for your electrical equipment in your owner’s manual.

The main characteristic of a fuse is its current rating. You may find 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 40 and even 50A fuses available on our website. As a rule, the maximum current a fuse can accept is marked on top or somewhere else on its housing. Depending on the application, fuses may also vary in design, ranging from blade type fuses, including mini, micro, regular and maxi ones, to tube glass and ceramic fuses. The majority of motorcycle fuse boxes are designed to hold blade style fuses which are the most common type of fuses used on bikes.
