While most Japanese motorcycle manufacturers prefer OHC engines, Harley Davidson along with some other companies stay true to the good old pushrod design in their V-twins. And they indeed have strong reasons for that, although such a move gives rise to numerous disputes among many riders comparing the OHC and OHV setups. Actually, a pushrod motor having one or several cams located by the crank is a tried-and-true solution providing decent performance, durability, and rather good fuel efficiency. Probably, such a motor is not meant for extreme revs, but it boasts high low-end torque and, in general, meets the needs of its owners.
But still, like other precise mechanisms, the valvetrain with pushrods and tappets may need some maintenance over time. Hydraulic tappets can be found in most H-D motors. Meant to minimize clearances automatically, they use the pressure of motor oil and need minimum attention. However, some riders report about the issues with the stock lifters. In some cases, they are filled with oil too slowly and create noise when the engine is starting or working in certain conditions. There is one more potential issue with hydraulic tappets: their ruining may lead to catastrophic consequences for the whole motor, as small metal particles can easily damage cams, bearings, and other crucial components.
