Camshafts can serve as a fairly popular means of altering the basic characteristics of an internal combustion engine. If you compare the torque-power curves of different motors, you will see that certain engines are better in the low-range rpm (Harley’s engines are a bright example). Many other motors develop more power when they are approaching the tachometer’s red zone. Along with engine type, camshafts are also responsible for this difference. The cams oriented on low- and high-end torque feature different time intervals when the intake or exhaust valves remain open, and their overlap time also differs.

Actually, there are several factors to take into account if you're going to install a performance cam: the parameters of the intake and exhaust systems, fuel supply, displacement, etc. Generally speaking, holding the valves open longer and making them close later, the camshaft enables the engine to more effectively run at high RPM, but it may come at the expense of performance at low revs. Hence the compromise. You cannot get rid of it completely. However, you can make your own choice rather than relying on the factory pre-set.
