Pushrod engines belong to the tried-and-tested OHV configuration which still remains pretty spread in the motorcycle world. They got such a name because of the presence of steel rods pushing the rocker arms, which has a pretty significant impact on the overall architecture of the assembly. Actually, these rods allow engineers to locate the cam closer to the crankshaft. This is particularly important for the transversely mounted boxer engines; also, such a design eliminates the need for a timing belt or chain in V-twins, making them fully operational with long-lasting gear drive in the valvetrain.

Making the engine smaller in height, pushrods have their own specificity. And if something goes wrong with the timing mechanism of a pushrod engine, things tend to be quite a bit more expensive than they would otherwise be. Therefore, it's not recommended to put cheaply made parts there – improperly dimensioned rods effectively destroy the engine’s ability to produce power. The same goes for solid and hydraulic tappets.
